Spastiscity and Cerebral Palsy Page 4 of 9 In actuality, all people who have CP have some degree of spasticity. Spasticity may be mild and affect only a few movements, or severe and affect the whole body. The amount of spasticity usually changes over time with the use of therapy, surgery, drugs and adaptive equipment to help control Spasticity. Damage to the brain's cerebral cortex is generally the cause of Spastic Cerebral Palsy. The percentages for the number of people affected by each type of CP varies from text to text. The percentages here are the ones that are the most common based on my observations. The use of therapy and surgery to reduce the amount of spasticity or to try and correct problems associated with CP can be more difficult the longer a person waits. Over time the body adapts itself to try and compensate for those parts of the body that are affected. It is best to identify problems early in life. This could make life a little easier in the future. GO TO: Support Groups (5) |
