Types of Cerebral Palsy Page 2 of 9 Quadriplegia - all 4 limbs are involved. Many people with this class of CP are often confined to a wheelchair if the CP is severe enough. If the person is not confined to a wheelchair, they often require a great deal of assistance. Diplegia - Both legs or arms are affected. Statistics show that this class affects the arms more often then the legs. In those cases where the legs (waste down) are the limbs being affected, many people have bladder control problems Hemiplegia - one side of the body is affected. The arm is usually more involved than the leg. People in this classification, depending on the severity, walk with a limp toward the side of the body that is affected. Triplegia - three limbs are involved, usually both arms and a leg. Monoplegia - only one limb is affected, usually an arm. Combination - This is a type of CP (often referred to as Mixed CP) is a combination of any of the types of CP listed above. CP can have several other complications associated with it, such as high or low blood pressure and low weight. In some cases you will find someone who has a combination of the different classifications. This is possible depending on the degree to which the body is affected. |
