Physical Therapies Page 2 of 10 Medical referred to as neurodevelopment treatment; this type of therapy is for gross motor skills and is considered one of the mainstay therapies for Cerebral Palsy Use of this type of therapy can be used to decrease spasticity, strengthen underlying muscles, and teach proper or functional motor patterns. A good Physical Therapist will also teach the you, family, or care-givers how to help the person with CP to help themselves. Depending of the severity of CP, only certain regions of the body may need physical therapy. Physical Therapy is commonly divided in to two divisions. With Lower Extremities exercises, a physical therapist will concentrate on gross motor skills and movements of the lower body, such as hips, legs and feet. Likewise with Upper Extremity exercises, a PT will focus on gross motor skills and movements of the upper body, such has the hands, arms, and back.
