Paralympics 2000 What are the Paralympic Games? They are the Olympic equivalent for the world's top athletes with disabilities. The
Paralympic Games recognize the participants' athletic achievements rather than their
disabilities. Athletes at the Paralympics include paraplegics, tetraplegics, amputees,
blind and cerebral palsied individuals, "les-autres" and those with an
intellectual disability. The Paralympics are held every four years, just after the Olympic
Games and at the same venues. The name 'Paralympic' comes from the Latin PARA, meaning
'WITH". When are the Paralympics? The 2002 Winter Paralympic Games will be held in Salt Lake City (United States). The next Summer Paralympics will be held in Sydney (Australia) in October 2000. The previous Winter Paralympic Games took place in Nagano (Japan) in 1998 and Summer Paralympic Games in Atlanta (United States) in 1996.
