CPC Job Index Page 3 of 7 Back in June of 1999 I went in for a job interview for a company. This company had already reviewed my resume and references. But I left out one detail on those papers - the fact that I was disabled. At the time I felt it had no bearing on my qualifications for a position. Especially since I was only applying for jobs that I knew I was capable of. Well needless to say, I am sure I lost that potential job the second I walked in the door. I will never forget the guy's mouth dropping to the floor when he saw me. What is the message behind this story? Someone once told me that finding a job is probably the worst job in the world. As I thought about that statement, and having a difficult time finding a job myself, I began to realize how right that person was. Finding a job can even be much more difficult when your disabled. All to often employers believe a person with a disability cannot do the same level of work that non-disabled person can do. There are those of us out there, including myself, that know we can do a job if we are giving a chance. I have started a compiled list of job openings and companies that tend to hire disabled individuals. To make a long story short, I now put the fact that I am disabled on my resume. I figure that if a company decides they do not want to hire me for that fact, then there is no need for me to be wasting my time with them and I probably do not need to be working there to begin with.
